Mommy Blogger' Accused of Murdering 5-Year-Old Son

A young mother has been charged with murdering her 5-year-old son – accused of poisoning him with an overdose of sodium and then documenting her crime in an online blog.

Lacey Spears' son, Garnett, was born in 2008 but was soon put on a feeding tube after Lacey claimed he had trouble eating. Garnett was hospitalized repeatedly, suffering from various medical complications, such as seizures and bleeding from his eyes, nose, mouth and ears.

Garnett’s illnesses raised eyebrows and at one point Lacey was investigated by Florida authorities – but the case was closed. Neighbors in New York were perplexed by his feeding tube, saying they had seen Garnett eat solid foods and that he had a good appetite.

The child was hospitalized again in January 2014 for seizures, where doctors also discovered high levels of sodium in his system. As her son lay dying, Lacey called a friend, asking her to get rid of the bag she used with Garnett’s feeding tube – police tested the bag and found high concentrations of sodium.

In April, the medical examiner ruled that the 5-year-old’s death was a homicide. Spears was then arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.

Prosecutors say the 26-year-old mother became obsessed with the attention she got from blogging about her son’s illnesses, when she was actually causing those injuries herself.

If convicted, Lacey faces 25 years to life in prison. Watch Patti Ann Browne's report above from Happening Now.

Jon Scott then discussed the case with defense attorney Esther Panitch and former prosecutor Tanya Miller.
