                                                                           Akin Ricketts

Cross River State has denied, in a stern statement, reports of an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the state.

Akin Ricketts the State Commissioner for Information said consequent to the "unsolicited but unfortunately rife rumours" about the existence of an Ebola viral disease (EVD) case in Calabar, the Government of Cross River State wished to put the record straight that thus far, there had not been any case reported in any part of the state.

"This heinous rumour is being peddled about via social media by some unscrupulous facebook users and this naturally has started creating some panic and fear among residents of the State,” the commissioner stated.

He assured that the State Ministry of Health, which was coordinating the Cross River Ebola Response Team, the Authorities of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and all other relevant stakeholders in the health sector had all confirmed the "fact" that no Ebola case existed in Cross River State.

Ricketts enjoined all Nigerians and residents of the State in particular to disregard this rumour and continue to enjoy the prevailing peace and tranquility in the State.

He urged all residents of the State to go about their normal daily routines and warn all users of the social media to be mindful of the information they spread on the internet as Government will not hesitate to take necessary actions against anyone found involved in the spread of such alleged falsehoods.

“Residents of the State are encouraged to learn and observe all the basic hygiene and precautionary measures provided by the State Ebola Response Team as this would go a long way in mitigating the spread of this disease. We want to assure all our state residents of Government's commitment to ensure that Cross River remains free of Ebola,” he said.
