According to Great Basin National Park's Facebook page, archaeologists recovered a Winchester Model 1873 in November sitting against a tree in the Great Basin National Park in Baker, Nevada.
"Who left the rifle? When and why it was leaned against the tree? And, why was it never retrieved?" one Facebook post asked. The park is busy researching old newspapers and family records, trying to determine who the gun — which will go on display for the National Park Service's centennial — may have belonged to.
The Winchester, according to the park service, has prominent place in American history and is often referred to as "the gun that won the West."
