Stranded sea lion pup spotted wandering on a San Francisco sidewalk

A stranded sea lion pup has been spotted wandering a San Francisco sidewalk in a scene that marine rescuers warn could become commonplace as the ocean heats up.

Video from the Marine Mammal Center in nearby Sausalito shows the male sea lion nicknamed Rubbish hiding under a car Thursday and waddling away from rescuers. They eventually got a net around the pup, moved it into a crate and took it to the center.

KNTV reports here that a veterinarian there recognized Rubbish, who also was rescued in Santa Barbara in February. Then, he was treated for pneumonia and malnutrition.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says more than 1,800 sea lion pups have been stranded in California since January because of a warming ocean and dwindling food supply.

I'll handover a Nigeria completely free of terrorist strongholds - Pres. Jonathan assures

President Jonathan and VP Sambo with Sec Gen, WCO, Vice Chair WCO & heads of Customs from West and Central Africa, Apr 30

BELOW: The State House Press statement

President Goodluck Jonathan pledged Thursday in Abuja that he will do all within his powers to ensure that all Nigerian territory still held by terrorists and insurgents are totally liberated before May 29, 2015. Receiving a delegation of Heads of Customs from the West and Central African Region of the World Customs Organisation led by the Secretary-General of the organisation, Mr. Kunio Mikuriya, President Jonathan said that he was determined to hand over a country completely free of terrorist strongholds to the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari.

The President said that ongoing military operations in the North-East had already recorded huge successes, with two states completely free from the control of terrorists, while operations in the third state had reached a concluding stage. “We can now say two states are completely free from terrorist control, while in the third state, it is only in one Local Government Area that they are still present.
That is in the Sambisa Forest,” he said. President Jonathan noted that the military had already moved into the forest to seize the remaining camps of the terrorists, adding that the recent rescue of about 300 abducted girls and women was further evidence of the success being achieved in the ongoing operation.

On his decision to concede victory to the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, before all the results of the presidential elections were announced, President Jonathan said that elections must be approached from a nationalistic point of view. “Our elections should be about where Nigeria is going. If Nigeria is moving forward, it is for the good of all Nigerians. My children and grandchildren will live and grow in this country and contribute to it. I always tell my colleagues to leave office when their time is up. We are trying to encourage African leaders not to remain in power as kings until death,’’ he said.

Mr. Mikuriya commended the President for supporting the reform of the Nigeria Customs Service, noting that other African countries had already started emulating the vision, strategy, adoption to new technology and result- oriented training of officers that were captured in Nigeria’s reforms. Why we stayed away from Ekiti peace meeting – APC lawmakers

The 19 All Progressives Congress members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly said they stayed away from the peace meeting brokered by Chief Afe Babalola and other elders because they believe Governor Ayo Fayose was not ready to have the crisis resolved once and for all.

The lawmakers said they are not comfortable with the security arrangement of 200 policemen said to have been made to protect them into and out of Ado-Ekiti which, according to them, had given away the motive of the meeting.

The APC lawmakers wondered why the peace effort would include provision of security to escort them out of the state instead of escorting them to the House of Assembly to continue their legislative duties.

The lawmakers in a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Speaker, Wole Olujobi, said their resolve on the rule of law and defence of the Constitution should not be subsumed under the need to pay them their entitlements which was one of the resolutions agreed at the meeting.

They said: “We cannot hold any meeting on the basis of monetary settlement in isolation of the consideration of the constitutional breaches by the governor.

“It is amazing that the truce terms will not include resumption of our duties‎, but just to settle us monetarily and escorting us out of Ekiti State.”

Picking holes in the entire arrangement for the meeting, the lawmakers wondered why the governor was announcing the peace meeting intermittently on the state media while secretly mobilising Peoples Democratic Party members from the 16 local government areas in the state to storm the venue of the meeting.

“What is this all about if not coded incitement for mob attacks?” the lawmakers queried‎.

They also insisted that the security agents told them in clear terms that they could not guarantee their security and warned them against passing through the streets of Ado-Ekiti to the venue of the meeting‎.

A fraudster planner blew brides' wedding cash gambling in Disney World

Mum-of-two Sarah Cawthorne was jailed for a year for a scam business that was "persistent, systematic and very mean indeed".

The gambling addict from Dudley, West Mids., conned hopeful brides out of £30,000 by promising them glamorous celeb-style weddings with chocolate fountains and snow machines.

Instead they were thrown receptions in bare rooms without a single decoration inside – because Cawthorne, 32, had blown the money on sites like Betfred and King Jack.

The fraudster also lived it up in Walt Disney World in Florida while couples back home in the UK had their special days ruined.

Mark Jackson, prosecuting, told Wolverhampton Crown Court: "In some cases the first brides heard about this fraud was when they received a call from their venue, as they were about to walk down the aisle, to be told the venue was bare.

"Investigations showed that on one day, when a number of bookings had been made in October 2012, she was spending thousands of pounds in Florida in Disney World while leaving her customers high and dry."

Cawthorne's wedding planning firm, called A Little Bit of Bling, charged up to £1,400 to provide bespoke items.

She even promoted so-called special offers – on the condition couples paid the full amount in cash up-front.

Bank records showed that she had made several transactions to King Jack and Paddy Power. In one week she transferred a total of £71,000 to her betting accounts to feed her addiction.

It is not known where she got the extra £41,000 from.

One victim Sarah Broadley told the court: "Sarah Cawthorne had told me that she'd be there at 9.30am. At 9.45am I got agitated and phoned her, then texted a message asking if all was OK.

"She said she wasn't coming – it was 11am and the wedding was at 4pm. I broke down and was absolutely gutted."

Cawthorne admitted fraudulent trading between July 2012 and September 2013.

Mukhtar Ubhi, defending, said she was suffering from a gambling addiction and depression.

He said: "This addiction to gambling is no less crippling than one to drugs or alcohol.

"A large amount of money was spent trying to recoup the losses.

"Help is what she needed at the time. This was not started as a fraudulent company from the outset. The addiction got on top of her."

Jailing Cawthorne, Judge Martin Walsh said her victims had been emotionally traumatised.

He said: "A large number of customers were let down on their special day and that was a direct result of deliberate dishonesty on your part.

"They trusted you and you had no intention of fulfilling the contracts. They were vulnerable to that extent.

"The aggravating feature in this case is the distress you have caused."

Pacquiao eyes Philippine presidency

When boxing hero Manny Pacquiao finally calls an end to his historic career in the ring, he will have his eyes on a much bigger prize — president of the Philippines.

The world champion, who will fight American Floyd Mayweather this weekend in boxing’s richest fight, has used the fame and wealth generated by his remarkable sporting feats to launch a successful political career.

The 36-year-old former street kid is now a second-term congressman, with publicly declared ambitions eventually to conquer one of Asia’s most chaotic and corrupt democracies.

Pacquiao confirmed his presidential ambitions to AFP in 2013, but has since been coy about his political plans.

“Yes,” he said then, when asked if he wanted to be president. “(But) it’s far away… it’s God’s will.”

In the run-up to the Mayweather bout, Pacquiao’s American promoter, Bob Arum, reignited Pac-the-politician talk when he said his client had a strategy laid-out for a presidential run.

“He is going to be a president,” Arum told paparazzi website TMZ.

“He is going to run for the senate of the Philippines in 2016 and then 2022 or maybe later he’ll run for president.”

– Poor attendance record –

Although he is almost unanimously adored in the Philippines for his exploits in the ring and widely admired for his sportsmanship, there are doubts about whether he has what it takes to be president.

Pacquiao has the dubious distinction of having the worst attendance record in Congress last year, raising questions as to whether he is truly committed to helping his constituents.

Pacquiao was present in only four of 70 session days in 2014, according to parliament attendance records. They also showed he authored only four bills, none of which passed into law.

“That’s what you call a zero record,” Ramon Casiple, executive director of the Institute for Political and Electoral Reform, told AFP.

Many also believe Pacquiao, for better or worse, has embraced the bruising, big-spending tactics that are commonly used in the Philippines’ ruthless political ring.

“Unfortunately, he is learning the bad side of politics,” Casiple said.

Casiple noted that, since losing in his first campaign in 2007, Pacquiao has turned political rivals into allies and paving the way for his own political dynasty.

“He was a good student of traditional politics after he lost,” he said.

One of Pacquiao’s longtime political mentors is Luis “Chavit” Singson, a self-confessed former gambling lord who leads his own political dynasty and whose politician son was jailed for cocaine possession in Hong Kong.

Former congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio, who gave Pacquiao his first and only political defeat in 2007, said the boxer could be too gullible in terms of whom he decided to choose as allies.

“I like Manny. I think he is a very sincere politician. He just needs to be careful about who he surrounds himself with,” she said.

– Savvy politician –

Still, Pacquiao showed in his successful campaign for a congressional seat in 2010 elections that he was a savvy politician.

He used his vast wealth to defeat dynasty patriarch Roy Chiongbian in the poor southern province of Sarangani.

He spent enormous amounts to win favour, giving a mayor a firetruck, building a gymnasium, installing electricity and potable water systems in churches and mosques, and paying for scholarships and funerals.

Then he formed an alliance with the Chiongbians that enabled him to run unopposed for a second term in 2013.

Pacquiao also quickly began laying the groundwork for a political dynasty.

Dynasties are widely blamed for the Philippines’ endemic corruption and weak democracy, with families using their power in local fiefdoms to control businesses and perpetuate their rule.

Pacquiao’s popularity and influence helped his wife, Jinkee, a political-novice housewife who had only previously worked as a shopping mall beauty consultant, get elected as Sarangani vice-governor in 2010.

At the same time, in his hometown of General Santos, a party mate was elected mayor while two of his brothers and a sister-in-law were also elected village councils.

But Casiple believes Pacquiao’s riches and boxing legend alone will not be enough to propel him to the presidency in 2022, and he has much to learn before then.

“Everyone who thought they could be president based on money and popularity alone lost,” he said.

Ateneo de Manila University political science professor Benito Lim also said Pacquiao needed to build a serious political platform if he wanted the public to see him as a presidential timbre.

“He can’t rely on just handouts if he wants to be president,” Lim said, referring to the big-spending tactics employed in the 2010 local election.

“His money is not enough. He needs a meaningful vision for the country and the public is waiting for that.”

PHOTOS: Nigerian Army releases shocking images of Sambisa Forest survivors

The Nigerian military has on Thursday released heart-wrenching images of what it says are survivors rescued from the notorious Sambisa forest where they were held hostage by Boko Haram insurgents.

The military said the true identity of some of the rescued women and girls are yet to be ascertained.
“At the moment, what is upper most and of priority is their movement to a conducive place where they are now undergoing thorough profiling to verify their true identity, where they come from, how they found themselves in the forest, etc,” the military said in a statement. “Additional number of persons are still being recovered from the forest. Until such comprehensive profiling is done, nobody can confirm whether they are among the Chibok girls or not.”

Defecting PDP members will come back on empty stomach – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party to come together to work to build a stronger party that would retain power in subsequent elections.

According to Vanguard, Jonathan spoke at the presidential Villa while receiving the PDP Presidential Campaign Organization’s (PCO) report from its Director General, Ahmadu Ali.
''I still believe though we have lost presidential elections, some national assembly elections, governorship elections especially in the north, PDP is still the dominant party. Let us not judge PDP by the result of the elections for the presidential elections. Our duty is to go back and identify areas of challenges ‎so that the party will come up strong and play the role as a very strong party. PDP is still the most organized party, is still the party that is not owned by anybody, is still the party that whatever you are you can get to any level with your competences and so on. So I encourage members of our party to remain loyal to the party, not to be so disillusioned because we lost presidential election and decide to go where they think they will fill their stomachs or something. Is not easy I have been here for five years plus, you hardly satisfy even 15 perent of those who work for you. Those people running and those already cross-carpeting, they will come back on an empty stomach because they will touch the primary members of their party, before they get to you, they know you are coming because you are hungry, before it will get to you the food will be gone.
''If you look at the result, the difference is just 2.5 million votes and if you look at the areas where it is perceived that PDP scored so low, PDP couldn’t have gotten those kinds of scores but the elections are over, the country first. It is not as if Jonathan alone made the sacrifice it’s all of us. I made the pronouncement but some of us are paying the prize. Some people pay more prize than I do, I know how some of you are already being persecuted and the kind of situation facing you. The key thing is that we must continue to unite, as a party we must continue to work hard so that as we go into subsequent elections 2019, 2023 and so on and so forth, PDP will continue to come up strong. Even in the interest of the nation, we need PDP.” He said

Teju Babyface's wife mugged on Eko Bridge, her car windows smashed

Comedian, Talk Show host and TV producer Teju Babyface's wife, Tobi Oyelakin, was on her way to the mainland at about 8pm last night when her car was attacked by hoodlums on Eko Bridge. She was in the car with her driver and 3 other girls in the back seat and were approaching the National Theater area of the Eko bridge when they encountered some traffic.

They had barely come to a stop when 4 boys leaped out of the shadows and knocked on the windows with torch lights and asked them to roll down the windows. They were still trying to come to terms with rising levels of panic when the hoodlums shattered the rear windows on both sides of the car and proceeded to rough-handle the ladies in the back seat and collect all valuables.

The hoodlums proceeded with impunity to open all the bags and pour the contents into nylon bags they brought along. This was in the presence of all other motorists on the bridge. The robbery went on for well over 2 minutes from start to finish.

When they had finished and disappeared into the shadows and the occupants of the car were able to drive away, they saw policemen further down the bridge on patrol and reported t‎o them that they had been robbed, whereupon the policemen empathized (or sympathized) with them simply by saying 'ah, those boys have started again'.

Luckily no one sustained grave injuries in the attack and Teju's wife is fine but very shook up.

Speaking about the incident, Teju said;
"One realizes that this is becoming almost commonplace and acceptable in Lagos as reports reaching us indicate that it happens daily. That may very well be an axiom but I share this with you to bring attention to what threatens to become endemic. A great contretemps I must confess."

Parallel Govt: APC attacks Jonathan, accuses President of plotting to scuttle transition

The All Progressives Congress has accused the Jonathan Administration of plotting to hinder a smooth handover of power on May 29.

The APC said it was becoming apparent that the administration will not fully cooperate with the incoming government, despite its public posturing in that regard.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party also described as an act of hostility and a patently-misplaced aggression the “unnecessary vituperation” against the incoming Buhari Administration by the Jonathan government, ostensibly because of the terms of reference of the Buhari Transition Committee.

The APC said the move was part of an orchestrated plot to sabotage the transition.

It rejected the “continued blackmail” by the Jonathan Administration as a result of President Jonathan’s concession of defeat, wondering whether the concession, gracious as it was, has now become a shield for all wrong doings.

“We are sick and tired of being blackmailed by the Jonathanians,” the APC said. “Gen. Buhari won the 28 March Presidential Elections fair and square, having satisfied both constitutional and other statutory requirements. We have no apology for our victory, and the concession of defeat – while it may have increased the political stock of President Jonathan – has by no means diminished the historic and emphatic victory of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress.”

Justifying its statement that the Jonathan Administration is plotting to hinder a smooth transition of power, the party said while the outgoing government had earlier issued a memo to all ministries, departments and agencies to make sure their handover notes are ready by April 20, the same government has now reversed itself and said the handover notes will not be ready until May 1.

“With the new date, the Buhari Transition Committee will have little or no time to take a thorough look at the handover notes or seek clarification on knotty issues, effectively handing it (Buhari Transition Committee) a fait accompli as far as the handover notes are concerned,” the APC said.

“This does not augur well for a smooth transition and gives the impression that the outgoing Administration is trying to hide something.

”By its dillydallying on the date for the readiness of the handover notes from the MDAs, the administration’s posturing that it is ready to hand over has been exposed as nothing but a smokescreen.”

APC described as illogical and strange the claim by the Jonathan Administration that the President-elect is trying to set up a parallel government simply because he has set up his own Transition Committee and given it terms of reference meant to guide the members on the discharge of their duties as members of that Committee, wondering how on earth those terms of reference have become the concern of the outgoing Federal Executive Council.

”In case the Federal Executive Council has forgotten, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress was declared the winner of the March 28th Presidential Election by INEC. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is therefore today the President-elect and the All Progressives Congress the incoming government,” the party said. “It is therefore illogical to accuse the President-elect and the incoming government of setting up a parallel government.

”It is either the outgoing Federal Executive Council has something to hide or is bent on sabotaging the incoming government. There can be no other reasons for the misplaced aggression that was exhibited in that ill-intentioned, unprovoked and vitriolic statement from the Jonathan government.”

It said that in order to put the matter beyond doubt, the party has decided to publish in full the terms of reference in question so that Nigerians can judge for themselves whether there is anything suggestive of intimidation or running a parallel government in the document.

APC warned the supporters of Mr. Jonathan not to overstretch the goodwill which the president has earned by his gracious concession even before INEC officially declared Mr. Buhari as the winner of the March 28th Presidential election, saying while it was momentous, it was not unprecedented in Africa, where power has changed hands peacefully between the ruling and opposition parties in several nations.

”Are they now saying that because the President conceded defeat, the incoming administration can no longer ask legitimate questions or seek clarifications that may arise from the handover notes,” the APC asked.

”We will not surrender to any blackmail, subtle or otherwise. We shall ask questions and ask for explanations and clarifications whenever and wherever we deem such necessary. We cannot run a transparently honest government or fight corruption if we are prevented from asking legitimate questions and seeking clarifications from the outgoing government during the transition process. Let the Jonathan Administration not tie our hands behind our back just because he conceded defeat after losing an election.”

Most blatant camel toe ever? Kate Hudson suffers crotch mishap in skintight lycra

They suffer bad hair days, fall over in public… and sometimes even suffer the holy grail of all wardrobe malfunctions.

Kate Hudson has launched her own fitness clothing range, but awkwardly showcased the downsides of wearing skintight lycra that contours to every curve while on set for a shoot.

The 36-year-old tried out a purple patterned leotard from her Fabletics collection, but it was a bit too snug – resulting in an epic example of the condition commonly known as camel toe.

We'll give you all a moment to cringe.

Kate soon noticed that her privates had become a bit more public than expected, and coyly placed her hands over her pelvic region for extra coverage.

The actress shouldn't be too red-faced though, as she rocked the sexy gym bunny vibe in her leotard – and besides, she has plenty of celeb company in the wardrobe malfunction brigade.

FG warns Buhari against creating a parallel government

The presidential transition committee has warned president-elect Buhari's transition committee against creating a parallel government at a time President Goodluck Jonathan is still fully in charge of affairs of the country.

Addressing state House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting today April 29th, the Minister of National Planning, Abubakar Suleiman who is also a member of the Jonathan Transition Committee, warned Buhari's transition committee members of making impossible demands from the government.
''We did receive from the incoming government’s transition committee some terms of reference which we looked at critically and council did agree with. Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan remains the current head of government of this country. The incoming government should avoid creating a parallel government while the government is still on. We take exception to some utterances and some of the terms of reference that look as if the current government is being stampeded or intimidated. Council frowned on most of the statements, most of the provocations and council members are advised to work in line with the terms of reference of the current government. Council members are also told that the terms of reference as formatted by our transition committee should be strictly complied with. When the incoming government takes over government, they can come out with their programmes, they can come out with their own agenda, they can decide to come out with policies in the way they feel like. This government remains resolute to the various programmes and projects it is pursuing and the government will continue to do that until the morning of May 29. The magnanimity of Mr. President should not be taken to be cowardice. That is why Mr. President and indeed council members enjoined Nigerians to see the olive branch extended to Nigerians and international community as a way of keeping this country intact and as a way of ensuring peace in Nigeria. As such, whatever the outcome of the election, what is important is Nigeria’s national interest. And that national interest should be protected, enhanced and promoted at whatever level we are,'' he said
