Time names Angela Merkel as 'Person of the Year 2015'

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been named TIME's Person of the Year. The 61-year-old world leader's selection was announced Wednesday morning on NBC's "Today" show.

The seven other finalists include Donald Trump, the Black Lives Matter protest movement and Uber's CEO, Travis Kalanick.

The magazine bestowed the title on her for the way she managed the economic crisis over the summer, and the way she's currently handling the refugee crisis and terrorism threat looming over Europe.
