It was gathered that Ibezunma, a 2016 graduate of physiology of the university, was killed in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Punch Metro learnt that the victim came to visit his friend, an undergraduate of the Imo State University, Owerri, who had yet to be identified.
Eyewitnesses told Punch Metro on Monday that the incident occurred at about 8.50pm on Sunday between Steve Jane Hostel and Obama Hostel on Aladimma Street, popularly called IMSU back gate.
Sources said the gunmen, believed to be undergraduates of the state university, had invaded some hostels around the back gate area and robbed the students of their phones, laptops and other electronic devices.
The sources said the gunmen, on their way out, accosted Ibezunma, who had gone to a nearby shop to buy bread and milk for his dinner.
They said the gunmen told Ibezunma to surrender his mobile phone to them, but he allegedly refused, making one of the hoodlums to shoot him, snatched the phone and fled the area.
Ibezunma was reportedly rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri, where he died.
One of the sources said, “The guy was killed after he refused to surrender his phone to the armed boys. They fled immediately after killing him.”
The President of Obama Hostel, Paul Onwuzuruike, told our correspondent on the telephone that the students of the university discovered the deceased’s identity through an identity card they found in his possession.
Onwuzuruike, who said that none of the students in the hostel admitted knowing the graduate or where he hailed from, added that his details had been given to policemen at Orji Police Division.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Andrew Enwerem, said he had yet to be briefed.
