FG condemns killing of another Nigerian in South Africa

                                                                      Tochukwu Nnadi

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has described the latest extra judicial killing of a Nigerian in South Africa as “worrying and condemnable”.

Dabiri-Erewa in a statement in Abuja on Monday said the latest gruesome killing of Tochukwu Nnadi by Police in South Africa, was unacceptable to the people and government of Nigeria.

The statement was signed by her Media aide, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

She reiterated President Muhammadu Buhari’s calls to Nigerians to avoid crimes like drug peddling which attracts stiff penalties, sometimes death.

The Presidential aide noted that the killing of Nnadi had brought to 20 Nigerians killed in South Africa through extrajudicial means in 2016 alone.

While appealing to Nigerians to avoid crimes, Dabiri-Erewa said the extra judicious killing of Nigerians is condemnable and unacceptable.

“The barbaric behaviour of the perpetrators is not only unacceptable, but also calls for urgent attention by diplomatic authorities in Nigeria and South Africa,” she said.

Dabiri-Erewa urged the South African Government to ensure that justice prevails by carrying out investigation and bring the culprit to book.

She reiterated her calls to Nigerians living abroad to always respect the laws of their host countries and be good ambassadors of Nigeria.

She recalled that a Nigerian based in South Africa, Tochukwu Nnadi, was allegedly choked to death by the Police in South Africa on Thursday Dec. 29, after he was arrested for allegedly selling drugs.

According to eyewitnesses, the man, popularly known as King Kingsley, was not struggling after he was arrested and handcuffed, but one of the officers held onto his neck and squeezed tightly until blood started gushing out.

“My heart goes out to the families of the deceased and pray God to grant the departed soul eternal rest,” the SSA prayed.

1 Nigerian killed, Another Abducted In South Africa – Union

The Nigerian community in South Africa on Sunday confirmed the death of a Nigerian and the abduction of another in that country.

Ikechukwu Anyene, the President of Nigeria Union, South Africa, told the News Agency of Nigeria on telephone from Pretoria that both incidents had been reported to the Nigerian Mission in that country.

He alleged that one Victor Nnadi, a native of Orlu in Imo State, was suffocated to death on Thursday by the Metropolitan Police in Cape Town.

Mr. Anyene claimed that witnesses saw the police handcuff the victim and suffocate him to death.

“When the people saw what happened, they raised an alarm and confronted the police.

“ The union`s chapter in Cape Town is already on top of the situation and trying its best to facilitate the release of the detained brother of the deceased,” he said.

Mr. Anyene, however, urged the Federal Government to persuade the South African government to put measures in place to stop the killing of Nigerians.

The union, he said, also got information on December 24 that one Austin Agunwa, a native of Umuawulu, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra, was abducted by unidentified persons at Rustenburg, North West Province.

He said Nigerians in the province raised a search team which later found the victim`s car abandoned, after a crash near a bridge.

Mr. Anyene, however, said the vehicle had no blood stain.

“As we speak, we don’t know his whereabouts and nobody has claimed responsibility for his abduction.

“We have directed the union`s chapter in the area to report the incident to the police and open a case on the missing Nigerian,” he said.

Mr. Anyene also said that the union`s national body would liaise with Nigeria’s High Commission to visit Rustenburg over the incident.

“We have also advised our people to be calm and remain law abiding as the union and the Nigerian Mission are handling the situation,” he said.

“Though the President is trying on corruption and security, Nigerians are hungry; they want to see more changes.

“There is the need to assist businessmen and women in their businesses.” He also advised the President to appoint experts who would help him to revive the economy.

Top wanted Boko Haram commander arrested at Borno LG Chairman's house

A yet-to-be identified Boko Haram commander was allegedly arrested in the private residence of a caretaker chairman of one of the area councils in Borno State.

Authorities suspect the council chairman is either harbouring or fraternizing with the suspected terrorist, as he failed to report his presence to security agencies.

Though news about the arrest is scanty, residents of 1,000 Housing Estate in Maiduguri where the chairman lives, said armed men stormed his house yesterday and arrested him and his “guest” believed to be a Boko Haram commander.

“They first barricaded everywhere, stormed the house and took them away but I could not go near to know if they recovered any arms or not,” one of the residents said on Sunday.

Efforts to get confirmation on the arrest were not successful as both the military and the Department of Security Services (DSS) did not respond to calls or issue official statement on the matter.

Queen Elizabeth II to miss church due to 'heavy cold'

The palace said the queen "does not yet feel ready to attend church as she is still recuperating from a heavy cold."

She also missed the Christmas church service last week.

The 90-year-old monarch had earlier delayed her departure for her rural estate in Norfolk for the Christmas holidays because both she and her husband Prince Philip were suffering from colds.

She traveled one day later than planned and used a helicopter rather than a train to shorten the journey time.

The prolonged illness has raised some concerns because colds and flus can be dangerous for elderly people. The queen has generally been in good health in recent years although she has cut down somewhat on her traveling and public appearances.

Philip, 95, has also reduced his schedule but managed to attend more than 100 public events in 2016.

Other members of the royal family including Philip plan to attend the service Sunday at the church on the grounds of her Sandringham estate.

Jonathan's 2017 message to Nigerians

In Former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan's New Year's (2017) message posted on his Facebook page on December 31 he calls on Nigerians to be united so that the dream of the country can be achieved.

''My prayer for Nigeria in the year 2017 is that we continue to forge greater ties across the length and breadth of this great nation to the end that we may achieve the Nigerian Dream:

A nation where the child of a nobody can become a somebody without knowing anybody. A nation where your knowledge, talent and character affect your upward mobility rather than the fact of your tribe, religion or birth. Such a Nigeria is possible if we all pitch in in word, action and prayer which I am sure we will do. I wish all Nigerians a very Happy New Year 2017. On behalf of my family and I, I congratulate you for making it into the New Year. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He said while the State witnessed significant improvements in its performance indices due to the massive investment on its tripod of Security, Infrastructure and Job Opportunities in 2016, more emphasis will be placed on sustaining the growth in 2017 through people-oriented programmes and policies which cut across education, health, agriculture, housing, tourism, environment, among others.

“In 2017, we shall carry out fundamental reforms on all our modes of transportation – Roads, Water and the Walkways. In this wise, an integrated transport management system is a priority.

“The State Government will embark on the Urbanisation of the Marina axis, Waterways Channelization, establishment of more Parks and Gardens as well as the Community Sports Centres and Stadiums in different locations across the State,” he said.

The Governor, however, urged Lagosians to continue to cooperate with his administration, especially in the area of prompt payment of taxes, while charging them to continue to keep the peace saying that it is only in an atmosphere of peace and stability that meaningful projects and programmes can be carried out.

While wishing Lagosians a prosperous and more fulfilling New Year, the Governor assured that the government would continue to judiciously distribute the State’s commonwealth and ensure that the ongoing social and infrastructural development gets to every part of the metropolis, adding that as the State prepares to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of its creation, all hands must be on deck to ensure that the prosperity of the past five decades is sustained.

“I promised Lagosians a government of inclusion, I do not intend to renege on that promise. We would continue to work 24 hours round the clock to deliver on our promise to ensure a Lagos that works for all,” Governor Ambode said.
