2015: NEGATIVE FORCES WANT TO TRUNCATE DEMOCRACY – PRESIDENT JONATHAN

President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria (picture above) has expressed fears that certain negative forces may see the 2015 elections as their last chance to truncate the nation’s democracy.

Jonathan spoke in Abuja yesterday at a one-day All-Political Parties Summit themed “Inter-Party Collaboration/National Stability and democratic Consolidation”.

He said though the nation’s democracy had come a long way, there were people still bent on scuttling it. He urged Nigerian not to allow this to happen.

“There are still very remorseless anti-democratic forces operating in the political system, ever ready to exploit lapses in the management of the political and electoral processes. Some of these forces may, indeed, view the forthcoming elections as their last stand to truncate the nation’s hard won democratic liberty. But, dear compatriots, with respect to the 2015 elections in particular, and our journey as a Nation in general, we must never allow these negative forces to prevail,” Jonathan said. He regretted that the current national political outlook, with regards to inter party collaboration, was less than salutary as “the conduct and utterances of leading politicians at home and abroad are rapidly creating and spreading unnecessary tension in the country.”

The president said unguarded utterances by politicians were fuelling terrorism in the country. He said the summit offered the opportunities for the politicians to review the possible consequences their actions and utterances on the nation’s polity and corporate existence.

“My belief is that my ambition at any level is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,” he said.

Jonathan praised former Head of State General Muhammadu Buhari who, he said, had “indeed demonstrated statesmanship and patriotism as well as the willingness to put partisanship aside in the collective to preserve our nationhood.”
