The National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Gani Adams, on Wednesday denied receiving N1.6billion from President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the just concluded general elections.
Mr. Adams refuted the allegation in a press statement.
Mr. Adams also declared the former Oyo State Publicity Secretary of the congress, Adesina Akinpelu, a persona-non-grata, adding that Mr. Akinpelu had no constitutional right to speak on behalf of the body and should be ignored.
“It is indeed ridiculous for any right-thinking person to claim or believe that the president would give the sum of N1.6billion to an individual,” the statement said. “Otunba Gani Adams denies the receipt of the sum of N1.6billion from either President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan or any other individual in this regards.
“It must also be noted that Otunba Gani Adams does not have direct access to the monies of Oodua People’s Congress. The organization has a very open and credible accounting mechanism for all its activities. Otunba Gani Adams, as a notable Yoruba leader, has risen above the mundane false allegations.”
On Mr. Akinpelu, former publicity secretary of the OPC in Oyo State, who called for Mr. Adams resignation, the statement said Mr. Akinpelu cannot speak for OPC.
It said Mr. Akinpelu was dismissed by the body in 2013 for gross misconduct.
‘He was neither a member of the national coordinating council nor the spokesperson of Oodua People’s Congress,” it said. “For the records, he in fact ceased to be a member of the OPC, Oyo State chapter since 2013 following his dismissal for gross misconduct and at no time did he rise to the position of national publicity secretary.”
According to the statement, Mr. Adams remained the national coordinator and leader of Oodua People’s Congress; as well as the leader of Oodua Progressive Union.
