The pilot reportedly made the call to ground crew, switched off one of the engines and performed an emergency landing after dumping fuel. The plane circled the airport several times before landing.
Emergency services were on standby at the airport as part of normal procedure, according to an airport spokesperson. Fire crews have since safely shut down the plane's engine and extinguished the fire.
'MH148 MEL-KUL made an air-turn back and landed uneventfully. The aircraft is being grounded for investigation,' Malaysia Airlines tweeted following the incident.
Flight MH148 took off from Melbourne Airport just after 2pm and emergency crews were called to the airport 20 minutes later.
Melbourne Airport say the plane landed safely and operations are continuing as normal.
There are believed to be 300 passengers and crew on board with all confirmed safe.
