Duo arrested for allegedly cheating mobile phone buyers

A 27-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man have been arrested for their suspected involvement in at least six cases of cheating, said police on Friday (Jun 19).

Police said they had received several reports of cheating since September last year. The victims said they had paid for mobile phones but received packaged boxes containing metal plates instead.

The victims had come across online advertisements selling mobile phones and arranged to meet up with the seller to carry out the transactions, said police. During the meet up, the female suspect would hand over a sealed packaged box purportedly containing the mobile phone and she would collect payment from the victim before leaving.

The duo were arrested on Thursday in Woodlands. Police also seized several empty mobile phone boxes and five metal plates as case exhibits.

Both suspects will be charged in court on Saturday. They may face up to 10 years in jail and a fine.
