One-year-old boy may lose his penis after botched hernia operation

A one-year-old boy may need his penis amputated after a bungled hernia operation left him with gangrene, it has been reported.

Mohamed Ekramy suffered complications after it was claimed his urinary tract was wrongly diverted during surgery in Alexandria, Egypt.

His father fears his son may lose his penis after his genitals became gangrenous, a condition in which a loss of blood supply causes body tissue to die.

Sporting Hospital offered him 200,000 EGP (£17,000) compensation, but he refused and demanded his son be treated, it was reported by The Cairo Post, which cited Youm7.

The father also told Dotmasr: 'The hospital's manager proposed to treat my son in another hospital at any cost on the condition that I remove what I posted about the operation on Facebook and to not to talk to reporters.'

He called on President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi to help his son and to improve the standards of care in public hospitals.

A police report has also been filed at Sidi Gaber police station over alleged medical negligence which has been passed to prosecutors.

Egypt's Prime Ministry later announced that the government would foot the bill for Mohamed's treatment.
