Buhari to leave Nigeria for UN General Assembly

President  Buhari will on Tuesday leave Nigeria for the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York .

The 74-year-old president will lead a delegation of the Federal Government to the annual event where he will be joining other world leaders to address issues of global importance as well as those peculiar to their different countries and regions.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, who disclosed this in Abuja on Friday, explained that Buhari would use the opportunity to build on his excellent relationship with other world leaders and demand the recovery of illicit and looted funds.

He revealed that the Nigerian government would make a case for the election of an Afro-centric UN Secretary-General, who would be pro-developing countries.

Onyeama stated that the president would also push for the candidature of Nigerians into various international agencies which he said had influence on UN policy and programmes globally.

While arguing that it was absolutely important that Nigeria engaged in multilateral relations, he stated that the country had candidates for positions in International Civil Aviation Authority and the United Nations Human Rights Council.

This year's United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is expected to start on Tuesday, 13 September.
