Ban secondary school students from writing external exams – Expert

The Director, Al-Iman Islamic Schools, Dr. Muhammad Sani-Idris, has advised the Nasarawa State Government to ban secondary school students from writing external examinations while not qualified to do so.

He said, “Some students write external examinations, like SSCE organised by WAEC and NECO, while in junior classes; these examinations are meant for those in SS3.”

Sani-Idris, whose organisation has schools in all states of the federation, spoke shortly after visiting the Al-Iman Islamic School in the Nasarawa State capital on Wednesday.

Sani-Idris described the “impromptu” sitting of SSCE and other examinations by students yet to complete the necessary education calendar as unhealthy.

He said, “The trend of parents and guardians often rushing their wards to write such examinations when they should be left to patiently learn and complete their education is very unhealthy and detrimental to the educational growth of the children.

“A major problem of education is the lack of adherence to policy; the current policy says that no one should be given secondary school certificate till he or she completes the 6-3-3-4 process.

“No parent should be allowed to make nonsense of this well-thought-out policy.”

The educationist also bemoaned the lack of adequate support from government to private initiatives, and appealed for more encouragement to private institutions toward quality education.

He said, “Insecurity has been a problem in Nigeria; to check that, youths must be educated. Government should try to help those contributing to making Nigeria secured.

“Children that come to Al-Iman learn the correct teaching of Islam; they are taught that they should not kill anyone just because he is not of their faith.

“They are taught to rather look at him as a brother and as a friend to which they must extend a hand of friendship.

“Government should offer grants to schools like Al-Iman to help nurture our children to be great leaders of tomorrow.”
