Wayne Rooney is presented a special jersey 50 by England boss Roy Hodgson to mark his record goal tally in the home dressing room at Wembley after the game on Tuesday night.
The 29-year-old Manchester United striker, who netted his 50th goal for his country from the penalty spot in the 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Switzerland, found the time to offer some motivational words for his younger team-mates.
''He thanked all the players and staff for everything they have done for him,'' Defender Luke Shaw said commenting on Rooney's inspiring words. ''He said with all the young players coming up like Harry, Ross and Raheem that maybe one day they will overtake him which is a nice thing for him to say.''
''Huge honour to be record goal scorer @england,'' Rooney tweeted alongside a photo of himself and wife. ''A night I'll never forget. Thanks every1 who has helped along the way.''
Rooney surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton's 45-year-old scoring record at Wembley on Tuesday
The FA are planning a night of Rooney celebrations for England’s final home Euro 2016 qualifier against Estonia on October 9.
Charlton, whose 45-year record was surpassed, will present Rooney with a golden boot,
A special flag to mark Rooney’s record goal-haul will also be on show for the match against Estonia.
Charlton, 77, ManUnited great, scored 49 goals in 106 appearance and ex-Tottenham Hotspur forward Gary Lineker, scored 48 goals in 80 games for England.
