The experts, who gave this advice in a statement issued yesterday by the Managing Director (MD) of COINMAC Information Technology Company, Mr Ayo Salami, said there was no need for government to expend a huge sum of money on voters’ card when the National Identity Card could serve the same purpose.
“A good National Identification System in the country could also be used as a substitute for voters’ cards in the nearest future if its citizens are all registered. This is because the bio-data of all citizens including thumb prints which is also a necessity for acquiring the voter’s card is contained in the Identity Card”.The statement added that the development would not only improve security in the country but will as well ease the work of the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He added that having the Master Card embedded in the National Identification System (NIS) will add value to the card.
In his words: “If government have details of every individuals in this country which is regularly updated it implies that government can follow up on the movements of its citizen.
“The National Identification System is a welcome idea if it is properly done, it will tremendously help this country if every citizen in the country is captured in the System apart from the fact that it is going to help our educational system, it will also help our democracy because there will now be no need for FG to spend huge sum of money to print voters card.”
