The Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria, Fouad Rajeh, on Friday, allegedly assaulted a policeman who was on duty at the official residence of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar.
A source disclosed that the envoy tried to drive pass through a barricade in front of the IGP’s residence in Maitama District of Abuja, but was ordered by the policemen on duty to turn back and follow another route for security reasons.
However, Mr. Rajeh, insisted on driving pass through the area, resulting in a heated argument between him and the security agents on duty.
“At some point, the ambassador became infuriated and began punching one of the policemen on duty at the IG’s house”, our source said.
The situation, our source further revealed, took another twist, resulting in the Saudi ambassador rushing to a top presidency official for intervention, “apparently to stop the matter from getting out of hand, or even arousing his superiors in Saudi Arabia”
When contacted by our reporter on phone yesterday, Ambassador Rajeh, who confirmed the incident, said the issue had since been resolved.
His words: “The issue is finished; you can go ahead and ask the IG”, the envoy said, asking further in apparent anger, “why do you have to investigate me on a Sunday?”, and suddenly ended the telephone conversation.
However, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Frank Mbah, when contacted top confirm whether the police authorities would be taking up the matter with the Saudi government, said he was not even aware of the incident. “The Police Force is a very wide area, so until now, I have not been informed about such incident”, he said.
