By some accounts the first selfie was taken by one Robert Cornelius, an American innovator in photography, when he unwittingly snapped a picture of himself in 1839. Fast-forward almost two centuries and social media has transformed the selfie into an all-out pop-culture phenomenon, with none other than Kim Kardashian West leading the charge; the budding tech entrepreneur even spoofed her penchant for personal pics in a Super Bowl ad.
