SQUASHED TO DEATH: Passengers killed instantly when 20-TONNE gravel truck flattens car

Driving instructor Deng Ko, 43, who was behind the wheel of the white saloon, and the front seat motoring student both miraculously survived.

Deng's car was waiting at a red light in Chengdu, the capital of south-western China’s Sichuan Province, when a 20-tonne gravel truck approaching from behind suffered a blown tyre.

The truck driver lost control and overturned on to Deng's stationary car, toppling the HGV and its old of rock and sack on top of the smaller vehicle.

The combined 60 tonnes of the truck and its load flattened the saloon like a pancake.

Aggregrates spilled across the street and the car was crushed out of sight.

Deng later said he watched the event unfold through his rear view mirror but did not have enough time to react.

He said: "I blacked out, but the last thing I remember before that happened was the cries coming from the student next to me and the three students in the backseat.

"The next thing I knew I was waking up in hospital."

Emergency rescuers spent almost an hour trying to lift the truck off the vehicle and clear the gravel.

Rescue worker Peng Ho said: "By the time all five people were pulled out the car, only Deng and the male student in the front passenger seat showed signs of life.

"The other three students in the backseat showed no vital signs and despite being immediately taken to hospital, medics could only declare them dead on arrival."

Initial police reports said the accident was caused by overloading because the lorry was carrying more than the maximum weight allowed.
