'I was punching above my weight': Grieving Rio Ferdinand opens up over wife's tragic death

GRIEVING Rio Ferdinand has confessed he was “punching above his weight” with his late wife Rebecca.

And the devastated Queens Park Rangers star, 36, admitted one of the things he will miss most about his soulmate is her homemade macaroni cheese.

Rio opened his heart in an interview shortly before Rebecca, 34, died on May 1.

The former England defender had expected his wife to live up to five years after her breast cancer diagnosis in March.

Poignantly, he told Esquire magazine’s June issue that the last time he had cried was at a wedding.

He said: “I’ve never cried at a film. The last time I cried was at a wedding when I was best man.

"I was worrying about my speech and it all just got too much.”

Rio paid tribute to his blissful family life with former fitness trainer Rebecca and their three kids Lorenz, nine, Tate, six, and four-year-old Tia.

The ex-Manchester United ace heartbreakingly admitted: “I like barbecues – my food’s always tasty. My wife does a macaroni cheese.”

He also hinted Rebecca was out of his league, saying: “My looks are an acquired taste. You play the cards you’ve been dealt.”

And he told how they had been thinking about buying pets for their children.

“I’m coming round to the idea of having dogs, my kids are bang into them,” he said.

Ferdinand also admitted he struggled with the concept of God.

He said: “I’m not religious. I believe that there is a higher power but I have difficulty in really going one way or the other with it.”

Rio is now relying on a close-knit group of friends and family as he tries to come to terms with Rebecca’s sudden death.

He said: “All the older people that you know when you’re young always used to say, ‘Ah, one day you’ll be able to count your best mates on one hand’.

“You go, ‘What? I haven’t got enough hands to count all my best mates on!’ That number dwindles.”

Rebecca was laid to rest in a private funeral in Bromley, Kent, last week attended by many of Rio’s famous friends.

Rio announced his wife had died on Queens Park Rangers’ website.
