Army detains 65 mothers of Chibok girls for 16hrs on ‘orders from above’

Acting on orders from above’, the men of the Nigerian Army on Tuesday detained 65 parents of the abducted Chibok girls who were on their way to Abuja from Borno to join the protest of the Bringbackourgirls (BBOG) movement over President Buhari’s silence  which is billed to hold Thursday, January 14.

The official handle of the Bring Back Our Girls group tweeted the following;

“Today, the Nigerian Army practically detained more than 60 parents of our 219 missing Chibok Girls since 7:00am at Askira in Borno State.”

Their only crime was that they were heading to Abuja to join in the planned #BBOGMarchToTheVilla scheduled for Thursday January 14, 2016.

The Nigerian Army claimed they have Orders From Above!! Who gave the Order? Is it President Buhari or the VP Prof Osinbajo?”

According to Tunji Olanrewaju, a member of the BBOG strategic team and spokesman, the 65 parents were stopped at Askira, near Chibok, in Borno state by soldiers acting on “orders from Above”.

“Over 120 of them (Chibok Girls parents) were supposed to come for the march on Thursday. So they were leaving Chibok this morning because it is a two-day trip.They set out at 7am – about 64 0r 65 of them – in several buses, but they were stopped at Askira by soldiers,” Olarenwaju explained.

“Initially, they said the order was from Maiduguri, but later they said it was from above.”

He added that a first batch of the Chibok parents had already left for Abuja before the 65 parents were stopped.

According to the BBOG group the officers of the Nigerian Military has apologized, claiming that the measure was to protect the women. Their statement read; “The top echelon of the military & security team has reached out apologising for the uncalled for & regrettable incident with the parents. Reasons adduced by them were that the fragile security context could have exposed such a large contingent of the parents to risks.

The military has accepted & confirmed to us that it will fully handle the movement of the remaining parents to Abuja today Wed 13.01.16.”
