A total of 11 officers were shot during demonstrations against the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile
The deadly attack came hours after President Barack Obama spoke to a nation on edge after multiple African American men were shot and killed by police earlier this week.
The videos quickly went viral, one of which was broadcast live on Facebook.
“When incidents like this occur, there’s a big chunk of our citizenry that feels as if, because of the colour of their skin, they are not being treated the same, and that hurts, and that should trouble all of us,” Obama said.
“This is not just a black issue, not just a Hispanic issue. This is an American issue that we all should care about.”
Dallas Police Chief David Brown confirmed three suspects are currently in custody.
Two men and one woman have been detained by police.
Another suspect is currently cornered in a parking garage exchanging gunfire with officers.
The snipers “planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could,” Brown said.
Some officers were shot in the back
A man live streamed the shocking moment snipers opened fire during the Black Lives Matter protest.
Shots can be clearly heard ringing out among the sirens as police officers are seen cowering for shelter behind a squad car, where at least one appears to be injured.
Michael Kevin Bautista, who was recording the video on Facebook Live, tells viewers: “They’re shooting right now and there’s an officer down.
“They’re coming from the right over there, from around these buildings,” he says, directing the camera towards a tall block.
Turning his camera back to where officers are lying on the ground beside their cars, he says: “There’s an officer down. They’re moving in on somebody. I think they might have got somebody.”
Michael, who tells viewers he’s standing behind a tree, then says he believes a second officer “is down” before he’s moved along, seemingly by police.
