Boy trips, punches hole through painting worth $1.5 million (See video)

A Taiwanese schoolboy accidentally punches hole through a $1.5 million painting while visiting the Face of Leonardo: Images of a Genius exhibition at the Huashan 1914 Creative Park in Taipei, Taiwan this weekend.

The 12-year-old boy who was walking by the exhibit and listening to the tour guide, lost his balance and fell right into the 17th century oil painting "Flowers" by Italian master Paolo Porpora displayed for all visitors to see.

One of the exhibition's organizers, Sun Chi-hsuan said,  "The size of a fist" in a $1.5 million artwork. It was such an unusual accident. The boy was listening to the guide and wasn't looking where he was going, and tripped and smashed a hole in the artwork."

According to CNN, But Sun said the cost of repairs to the damaged painting would be covered by insurance, meaning the boy and his family won't be asked to pay up.

"When I told the curator, he was so shocked that for two to three minutes he couldn't utter a single word," Sun added. "But he was actually most worried that the boy and his family would put too much pressure on themselves."

"We will begin the restoration work by ... mending the part that was torn on the back," said Leo Tsai, a fine art restorer. "We will then turn to restoring the paints on the front side."
