Atletico Madrid stuns Barcelona to claim Spanish Title 2014

A second half goal from Diego Godin earned Atletico Madrid the point they needed to be crowned the 2013/14 La Liga champions after playing to a 1-1 draw against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Saturday.

The point sees Atletico top league standings on 90 points while Barcelona finished second on 87 points.

The opening 45 minutes was a high paced affair with both side’s creating a fair few chances in front of goal, but both teams’ finishing lacked something to be desired.

Atletico suffered a couple of early set-backs as both Diego Costa and Adrian Turan had to leave the field injured before the 25 minute mark.

Alexis Sanchez broke the deadlock for Barcelona in the 34th minute with a wonder strike from the right edge of the 18-yard box, the ball thundering past the Atletico keeper at his near post, 1-0.

Atletico took control of the match after going behind, but could not fashion any decent scoring opportunities before the break.

The half ended 1-0 in favour of Barcelona which as it stood handed them the La Liga title.

The start of the second half saw Atletico continue where they left off and they came close to levelling matters a minute after the restart when David Villa struck the post from just inside the box.

Atletico made their goalmouth pressure pay off in the 49th minute when Diego Godin equalised for his side after superbly heading home a corner-kick, 1-1.

Barcelona thought they had retaken the lead in the 64th minute when Lionel Messi put the ball in the back of the net, but he was rightly adjudged offside and the goal disallowed.

The home side continued to search for the winner after that and came close in the 81st minute when Dani Alves tried his luck from distance, but he saw his stinging shot brilliantly saved by the keeper.

Atletico weathered a late storm from Barcelona to hold on for the draw and the point that saw them crowned the 2013/14 La Liga champions.
