Not Again! 15 Teenagers die as Boat Capsizes In Kano

On Tuesday, October 14, 2014, a boat mishap occurred in Jobawa village in Gurun Mallam local government area of Kano state, killing 15 teenagers, mostly females, according to Thisday

The tragedy was said to have happened as a boat conveying the victims to Jobawa from Lanjan where they had gone to purchase cassava capsized in the middle of the river.

Utubatu Yaro, who made the news of the accident public said it happened on Monday, October 13, 2014 following a turbulent rainstorm which made the operator to lose control of the engine leading to the capsize of the boat.

yaro said: “ They normally come here to supply cassava and sell it out around Garin Mallam town. They don’t normally stay up to evening time, but unfortunately, because God has destined that the incident will happen, they were here until Magrib (evening prayer) and there was a violent rainstorm. On their departure, the rain began to fall heavily. I believe it was the excessive rain that fell into the boat as well as the storm that overturned  the boat. We have been able to find the bodies of nine of them, and we are searching for the bodies of the remaining .”

He also said the boatman had escaped the accident as he was a good swimmer, but couldn’t save any of the girls as the rainstorm was very strong.

The state’s police spokesman Mustapha Abubakar confirmed the accident, although he said ten people died in the mishap, while five people were rescued, according to reports made available to them.
