Douglas Murphy developed the severe infection after he brushed his leg against a bin bag at a kindergarten picnic in May 2010.
The 47-year-old barely registered it at the time, but the scrape almost cost him his right leg when it became infected with necrotizing fasciitis – a flesh-eating bug.
Antibiotics only began to kick in just as doctors were printing out the paperwork to authorise amputation.
Douglas, who owns a summer camp company, said: "The bag's bottom corner brushed – and we're talking barely touched – my ankle and left a little teensie bit of juice on my sock.
