Why Jose Mourinho was sent off in Manchester United’s win over Southampton

Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Southampton after bizarrely grabbing the fourth official on the touchline.

In the closing stages of the game at St Mary’s, the United manager was constantly encroaching on the pitch as he attempted to organise his players.

Mourinho then wrapped his arms around the fourth official, Mike Jones, who had called over the referee Craig Pawson.

The United boss was sent off for his animated antics, and he made his way from the dugout without arguing and shook hands with Southampton’s coaching staff.

Mourinho also got in Jones’ way as the fourth official held up the board to signal the arrival of substitute Charlie Austin.

When asked about the incident after the match, Mourinho replied: ‘I don’t know, Craig told me to leave, so I left.

Asked if he clashed with the assistant referee, Mourinho said: ‘No – with the fourth official.’
