Michel Platini confirms to stand for the FIFA presidency

The President of UEFA Michel Platini has confirmed his intention to stand as a candidate for the FIFA presidency on Wednesday July 28.

The 60-year-old former French football player, who has been President of UEFA since 2007 and a member of the FIFA Executive Committee since 2002,  pledged to work tirelessly for the unity and well-being of world football.

"This was a very personal, carefully considered decision, one in which I weighed up the future of football alongside my own future,'' he said on the UEFA website. ''I was also guided by the esteem, support and encouragement that many of you have shown me. I pledged to work tirelessly in the interests of football. There are times in life when you have to take your destiny into your own hands. I am at one of those decisive moments, at a juncture in my life and in events that are shaping the future of FIFA."

Sepp Blatter has held the FIFA presidency since 1998, but he announced in June that he was resigning just days after being re-elected amid the corruption scandal that has engulfed world football's governing body.

Candidatures must be submitted by 26 October 2015, and the election will take place at an Extraordinary FIFA Congress in Zurich on 26 February 2016.
