India's first lady Suvra Mukherjee dies at age 74

India's first lady President Pranab Mukherjee's wife Suvra Mukherjee has passed away at a Army Hospital on Tuesday morning. She was 74.

"Suvra Mukherjee died after a cardiac arrest. She was on ventilator till the time of her death," hospital PRO Sanjay Kumar said.

''It is informed with deep sorrow that First Lady, Mrs Suvra Mukherjee passed away this morning at 1051 am. First Lady Smt,'' Rashtrapati Bhawan spokesman Venu Rajamony said in a statement. ''Suvra Mukherjee suffered a cardiac arrest on August 7, 2015 & was admitted to ICU of Army Hospital (R&R) same day. Smt. Suvra Mukherjee was born on September 17, 1940 in Jessore and married Shri Pranab Mukherjee on July 13, 1957. Smt. Suvra Mukherjee was a vocalist of Rabindra Sangeet & founded the ‘Geetanjali Troupe’. Smt. Mukherjee was also a talented painter who had many group and solo exhibitions to her credit. Smt. Mukherjee has written two books: Chokher Aloey and Chena Achenai Chin.''

Besides her husband, Suvra is survived by two sons Abhijit, a Congress MP, and Indrajit and one daughter Sharmistha, who unsuccessfully contested the Delhi Assembly elections on a Congress ticket.
