Jimmy Carter says cancer has spread to his brain

Former US President Jimmy Carter is all smiles while discussing his cancer diagnosis during a news conference at the Carter Center in Atlanta on Thursday morning August 20.

The 90-year-old said after cancer doctors removed a small mass from his liver, they found the cancer had spread and there were four spots of melanoma on his brain. Carter will undergo his first radiation treatment later today

''I've had a wonderful life and thousands of friends - an exciting and adventurous and gratifying existence,'' the 39th president told reporters. ''So I was surprisingly at ease, much more than my wife was. But now I think it's in the hands of God and I'll be prepared for anything that comes. I'm surprised I didn't go into an attitude of despair or anger or anything like that. I was just completely at ease.''

Carter said he received calls from well-wishers, including both former presidents Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton, President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry.

Carter smiled and chuckled as he said: ''It's the first time they've called me in a long time.''
