''Nigeria has almost reached self-sufficiency in rice and sugar production'' - Jonathan

President Jonathan released a statement on Facebook today about his administration achieving self-sufficiency in food production in the country, The statement reads below....

My dear friends on Facebook,
As I have said on numerous occasions, any nation that cannot feed itself is not fully independent. It is in this regard that I made it a top priority of this administration to work towards achieving self-sufficiency in food production.
To this end, we made quality appointments in the agricultural sector. We also provided a most ambitious 200 Billion Naira Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme tailored specifically for the sector's 14 million farmers (of which 2 million are women).
The end result of these reforms are that Nigeria's food import bill which used to be 1.1 Trillion per annum in 2009 is now 634 billion Naira as at 2014. I am confident that this figure will reduce further in 2015, especially as Nigeria has almost reached self-sufficiency in rice and sugar production.
We are growing agricultural entrepreneurs through NAGROPRENEURS. We are encouraging the growth of younger farmers by taking the message to primary and secondary schools through our Agric Transformation Agenda. Our vision is to ensure that Agriculture is practiced as a business, not the way it has been done in the past. I am looking forward to generations of millionaires and billionaires in our country.
This is forward movement. It is veritable proof that the Transformation Agenda is a present continuous reality.
- GEJ.
