Photos: This giraffe got stuck in a well but was saved by its long neck

With a thick rope looped around his lengthy neck, this giraffe appears to be unprepared for the almighty tuck required to get him out of trouble after he inadvertently became stuck in a waterhole.

Safari rangers in South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park were forced to step in, calling in additional staff to help free the the distressed animal.

Staff had to tie a rope around the colossal animal's extensive neck and drag the creature, kicking and wriggling to safety.

The dramatic incident happened at the Balule Nature Reserve, a protect area in the Limpopo area where all of the so called 'Big Five' can be found.

Park rangers were called after the giraffe was spotted trapped inside the shallow well, unable to free itself.

Rangers quickly drove to the distressed animal and began to assess the best way to rescue the colossal creature.

One of the park rangers produced a long, black tow rope from the vehicle. Tying it into a loop around the thicker end of the giraffe's neck, the ranger carefully secured the rope, taking care not to restrict his breathing.

Taking care not to pull on the rope too hard, the vehicle begins to reverse, causing clouds of orange dust to kick up from around the tyres.

The animal can be seen writhing on the ground, tangling its legs as it struggles being pulled out of the well.

A ranger approaches the animal and knees down to appeal a towel to the creatures head, in an attempt to ease its distress.

An aesthetic was also given to the giraffe shortly after the rescue operation to help the creature with the shock of his ordeal.

Once free and recovered from the aesthetic, the giraffe quickly ran into the bush.

The rescuing of the magnificent creature was photographed by Brass Brassett, a local guide and programme manager at a volunteer project at the reserve.
