Minister of Sports Solomon Dalung paid a surprise visit to the decayed National Stadium in Surulere area of Lagos on Thursday November 26.
In a recent chat with the Special Adviser to the minister on Sports, Nkem Anibeze who hinted Saharareporters said what the Minister saw was an eyesore.
''It was an impromptu visit, but the minister was able to pull through by moving round to see things for himself. Even though he came to Lagos for the SWAN 50th anniversary, but he insisted he wanted to go round. At first he was hindered from moving round because he was told everywhere was locked-up'', she said.
Speaking further, she said: ''On getting to the main bowl arena, he (the minister) asked was this the National Stadium he knew? Because of the bad condition of the pitch, he also visited the new boxing gym, the medical centre, the swimming pool and the lawn tennis court; and he quickly showed some pity for the athletes, with him drawing a conclusion that no wonder the athletes have been unable to win medals in major competitions for the country because of the facilities he saw on ground at the Stadium.
''He visited the swimming pool and what he saw was an eyesore. He met some workers at the premises, who told him the contract was awarded to a contractor in 2011, and up till now nothing has happened; and he is not happy at all with the development. He then proceeded to the lawn tennis court where he met some group of people at the court.''
