CNN flash poll names Hillary the winner of final presidential showdown with 52%... but Trump claims victory in Fox's own

The results of Wednesday's presidential debate began to trickle in in the early hours of Thursday morning, with neither candidate the clear winner thanks to contrasting polls.

Clinton was named as the victor in a flash poll carried out by CNN, impressing 52 per cent of viewers with her performance over Trump's 39 per cent.

Fox News however put the Republican candidate storming ahead in its own poll.

Within hours of the debate, which was moderated by Fox reporter Chris Wallace, the network declared Trump the winner with 59 per cent over Clinton's 37 per cent.

Clinton triumphed over Trump in the first and second debates, according to CNN's coverage.

Hours earlier, a wider poll determining which of the candidate's was more likely to win the election put Clinton in front.

Bloomberg gave the Democratic candidate a nine point lead ahead of their final meeting with 47 per cent of voters lending her their support.

Thirty-eight per cent said they would vote for Trump on November 8.

A Reuters/Ipsos survey put Clinton eight points ahead at 44, against Trump at 36. Johnson was on six points and Stein on two.

Quinnipiac had her leading Trump by seven points among likely voters, at 47 to 40 in a four-way match-up.  The Economist/YouGov poll placed her in front at 42 per cent to her rival's 38 per cent.

Two separate daily tracking surveys put the candidates neck-and-neck: Rasmussen showed them tied at 42 per cent among likely voters, and the LA Times/USC Tracking poll, which has historically put Trump ahead, had them both at 44 points each.

The only major national survey to put the Donald in the lead was IBD/TIPP. They had Trump a touch ahead, at 41 points to Clinton's 40 in a four-way split.

With less than three weeks until the November 8 election day, and with six per cent of voters reporting that they have already cast their ballot, time is running out for Trump to turn things around.

The GOP candidate declared Tuesday that he no longer trusts the pollsters.
