Harlem Globetrotters basketball legend Meadowlark Lemon dies aged 83

Meadowlark Lemon, who was lovingly known as the ''Clown Prince of Basketball'' during his over 20-year run with the Harlem Globetrotters, died Sunday in Scottsdale, Arizona, Globetrotters spokesman Brett Meister said Monday. Meister did not know the cause of death. He was 83.

''For a generation of fans, the name Meadowlark Lemon was synonymous with the Harlem Globetrotters,'' Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider said in a statement. ''He was an incredible entertainer and brought happiness and lifelong memories to millions around the world. We have lost a great ambassador of the game.''

Former NBA star and rapper Shaquille O'Neal , 43, said today in a tribute on Facebook: "The Great Meadowlark Lemon of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters dies at 83. Rest In Basketball Heaven Sir!"
