Senate orders beggars, destitute, prostitutes out of Abuja

The Senate committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) yesterday disclosed that it had concluded arrangement to evacuate destitute, commercial sex workers as well as hawkers off the streets of Abuja

The committee equally made arrangement to allocate Abuja Metropolis to banks and corporate organization for maintenance and beautification.

Chairman of the committee, Sen. Dino Melaye disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the National Assembly complex.

“We have summoned the FCT Police Commissioner and the Commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to help in ridding destitute off the streets.

“We are appalled at the insecurity in Abuja. We are also very uncomfortable with the number of hoodlums on our streets in Abuja. Beggars, destitute, commercial sex workers spread across every nook and cranny of the city.”

He added that the FCT ministry had being instructed to provide logistics for the immediate evacuation of miscreants saying that Abuja must be a city that would operate in line with the dreams of the founding fathers.

“We have also asked the FCT to put in order, the rehabilitation camp in Bwari that is specifically built for those arrested on the streets. Enough facilities are there to house them before their eventual movement to their various states,” he said.

Melaye also noted that for the maintenance of the streets in the FCT, the committee and 15 banks were working toward giving the FCT a beautiful outlook.

He disclosed that there were 18 other corporate organisations that had accepted to work with the committee.

While supporting the move, a member of the committee Sen. Stella Oduah said that the committee was committed to ensuring a cleaner and better city.
