If Nigerians oppose new cars for Nass, we will throw it out – Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani has said that the National Assembly with its own budgeting system should not be part of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) implemented by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

In an interview on AIT, he said the lawmakers have resolved to be completely independent and should be respected as such.

Sani also advocated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) be excluded from the TSA, to enable it function independently and efficiently.

“I don’t know how we fit into that, there are those others who also gave their positions as per the TSA that it is better all the arms of government key into this TSA so that we can now have a general assessment and scrutiny on how all monies are being spent.

“The judiciary too is part of it and also we would have preferred to also have an INEC that does not need to call anybody and for it to conduct it’s own activities.

On car loans for the lawmakers, the Senator said when the matter is brought to the Senate, the interest of Nigerians will be placed above all.

“If 469 cars are opposed by Nigerians, certainly we will see a flood of protesters outside the National Assembly and we are very conscious of that.

“This issue, once it is brought before the floor of the Senate, I believe that, one thing you should rest assured of is the interests of Nigerians will take course apart from any other interests, “he said.

Following the huge sums purportedly allocated to the National Assembly for official cars, a development economist Mr. Odilim Enwegbara chided the lawmakers to forfeit the cars, housing allowances and other loans due to them.

“Why won’t someone stand up and say I don’t need car loan, I don’t need any money.” he said.

A lecturer in Bingham University, Dr. Akpan also responding to the issue said it boils down to patriotism, saying “I always want to challenge any person if you know how the economy runs why do you have to accumulate so much wealth for yourself”.
