2016 Budget: Senate makes Buhari’s letter on alleged alteration public

The Senate has officially acknowledged communication from President Buhari on 2016 budget proposals which was presented to the joint session of the National Assembly on 22nd December, 2015.

Making the content of the President’s letter public to the National Assembly by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, at Tuesday’s plenary, President Buhari stated that the Executive was still checking the draft of the budget at the time of its presentation just to make sure that there were no errors, and having done that, he had forwarded the corrected copy to the National Assembly for further deliberations.

“I will like to inform you that as at the time of our presentation of the draft copy of the 2016 budget, we were checking the draft to make sure there were no errors,” the letter reads.

Buhari noted that he was aware of the confusion the details of the draft which was forwarded through the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, but emphasised that the correction was in the best interest of the nation.

“I know the confusion it has generated, but the correction was for the good of the nation,” he added.

According to the letter, Buhari assured the Senate that the corrected version has no alteration of figures from the first version that was presented, but the changes only reflected on its items.

“The corrected version of 2016 National Budget has no changes in figures,” he insisted.
