Manchester United continue hunt for a new No.7 to replace Angel Di Maria - and try David Beckham

David Beckham wore the No 7 jersey at the Manchester United between 1997 and 2003 when he was active with the club, according to Mirror.

After years of world class players sporting the iconic number, Manchester United's No 7 shirt has become something of a poisoned chalice in recent years.

George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the club legends to have starred in the shirt over the past few decades.

However, since Ronaldo's departure for Real Madrid in 2009, Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia and Angel Di Maria have all disappointed during their brief spells in the shirt.

Di Maria was given the shirt last summer but, despite starring in the opening weeks of his United career, dropped out of the first-team reckoning during the second-half of the season and is on the brink of a £46m move to Paris Saint-Germain.
